Mpumalanga - "the place
where the sun rises" – is one of South
Africa’s provinces with impressive picturesque
natural beauty and a wealth of wildlife.
Surrounded by two countries Swaziland, Mozambique
and Gauteng province to the west, it is situated
primarily on the high plateau of the Middleveld. In
the northeast, it ascends towards mountain peaks and
ends in a breathtaking escarpment.
Nestled in the eastern region is the magnificent
Kruger National Park, a nature reserve teeming
with wildlife and birds making it the ultimate Big
Game Country. The Kruger National Park is world
renowned, as are several of the luxurious private
reserves on its western boundary. The entire area
offers excellent opportunities for bird-watching,
hiking, horse-riding and fishing. Streams once
panned for gold have become the haunts of eager
anglers and lazy trout.
Mpumalanga forms part of a grassland biome. The
escarpment and the Lowveld form a midway zone
between this grassland area and the savanna biome.
Long sweeps of rolling grasslands change into
thickly forested ravines and roaring waterfalls of
the escarpment, only to change again into the
subtropical wildlife splendour of the Lowveld.
The province is situated in a summer-rainfall area,
with occasional winter snow on the high ground in
the escarpment. Thick mist is frequent during the
hot and humid summers. |
